Smoosh 2 caramels together into a flat rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. If they're too firm, pop them in the microwave for 5 seconds. Do this with all your caramels and put them aside.

Put your chocolate chips and shortening in a bowl. Melt them using either a double boiler or microwave at half power, making sure to stir often until it's all smooth.

Mix the puffed rice cereal into your melted chocolate until everything's well coated.

Take each caramel rectangle and cover it with the chocolate-cereal mix. Dip them using a fork, then run the bottom across the bowl edge to get rid of extra chocolate.

Lay your chocolate-covered caramels on waxed paper. Let them sit for 1-2 hours so they can firm up before you eat them.
